"I have a new HP laptop - I think it's a bit ridiculous that my computer is now too advanced..."

- Which HP Laptop ? Did the laptop come with Win10 pre-installed ?

Which game will not run ? Is it disk based or from Steam or another download site ?

List some details of what is, or is not happening , including any fixes you have already tried.

"My games won't play because they ran on DirectX 9.0c on Windows XP. "

- Nothing to do directly with either DX9 or Win10 not having DX9 . Win10 has all of the DirectX files.

DX9.0c is not a single file. That is the title of the older installer.

There are many DX9 files, and games select specific DX files that they run on.

The June2010 installer (bottom of post) has all the same DX9 files as the 2009 installer, but also has

the most recent DX9 files (d3dx9_42 & 43);  the most recent DX10,  and DX11 files.

Win7/8/8.1 all have three versions of DX - 9,10 & 11.

Win10 also has DirectX 12 (only two graphics related DX12 files that I am aware of atm).

I believe DX12 will be getting updates via Windows updates when available.

- The following is a list of the Direct X  .dll's you will have when the files are up to date.
There are more DX files (Xinput and audio), but these are most of the graphics related Direct X  .dll's

- Go to the Windows \ System 32 folder, (and SysWOW64 if you have 64bit).
They are in alphabetical order and will start with  d3dx9_24 > 43 . Then d3dx10_33 > 43
& finally d3dx11_42 > 43.
There should also be - d3d9, d3d10 and d3d11. These come before the D3Dcompilers - 33>43.

The DirectX Web installer will install any 'missing' DX files

(generally more useful with a 'clean' Windows 7 install, as it was released a bit before the most recent files.

I can't comment on clean Win8/8.1/10 but would hope that MS has there act together enough to

have included the 'latest' files - from way back in June 2010).

Download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Official Microsoft Download Center

The full DX installer (June 2010) overwrites all DX files.

This is the best option if all files are installed and there is suspicion of a corrupt file, but obviously can

be used instead of the Web Installer.

Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - DirectX Redist (June 2010)

Windows 10 is pre-installed and the games are discs such as The Sims 2 etc which all run on Windows XP

I have tried to install DirectX 9.0c but the laptop won't allow it due to the Windows 10 os so I'm not sure what else I can do

If Win10 is pre-installed it should have all of the DirectX files.

If there are corrupt files Win10 should not be a problem when trying to reinstall using the June 2010 installer.

Are you using the June 2010 I linked to ? I did mention that 9.0c is out of date.

(I'm on a Win7 machine atm, but I will verify this when I get back on Win10).

(EDIT: Verified. The June 2010 installer still  works with Win10.)

- Are you getting an error message  when trying to install DX ?

- 'Open' the disks and look for a file titled secdrv.sys.If the disks have this file report back and I will

post details of an evil feature of Win10 that prevents people from playing many disk based games... DRM blocking.

With Win10 there is only one cure - a  noCD pach/hack,  or submit to MS DRM blocking extortion,

and buy the game again from a download site.

I have Directx version 12, and because I am running on Win10 it won't allow me to install Directx 9, when I do it notifies me that I must have Windows XP or older in order to run this version of DirectX.
Is there anything I can do?

I have downloaded the June 2010 version, it still doesn't work. The message I get:

Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer.

"I have Directx version 12, and because I am running on Win10 it won't allow me to install Directx 9..."

- As I mentioned earlier. Win 10 has DX 9,10,11, and only a couple of DX12 files.

Why the DirectX Redist (June 2010) will not install I don't know. As this installer contains DX9,10 and 11

files having a compatible graphics adapter should not be an issue, unless the graphics processor is not

functioning properly.

- Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the DirectX installer will run from there.

(If you are not already aware of it - The installer first unpacks files to a folder in a location of your choice.

You then need to open the folder and find the DXSETUP.exe to finish reinstalling DX. This folder can then be deleted).

You are failing to provide enough information.

- Have you verified the files I  listed previously are in System32 ?

If they are then you most likely either have a corrupt  file or files, or your graphics processor is

not functioning properly.

- Being brand new does not mean the machine cannot be faulty. It's also a good reason for using the

support provided under warranty. Three months ago when you started your topic would have been the

better time to take it back to point of sale, or start a support ticket with HP,  but it's still not too late.

- You have also not confirmed if the file titled  - secdrv.sys - is on the games disk. If it is the game will not

launch when using Win10 without using a noCD fix/hack.
I know that the Sims 2 and all of the expansions use either SafeDisk or SecuROM, but some later versions of SafeDisk don't seem to get blocked.

- What model HP laptop ? Does it have both integrated graphics ( eg- Intel HD ) and a dedicated

graphics card (AMD or Nvidia ) ?

If it has both integrated and dedicated I would be inclined to think there are corrupt DX files as it is

unlikely both graphics processors would be faulty.

btw - Steam download games are not the only ones that install DX.  Pretty much all disk based

games (and probably all download) will reinstall Direct X. Unfortunately while the games used to ask if you wanted to install DX, newer games and Steam don't  bother.

This can be a problem as the continual reinstalling of DX by games can at times corrupt some DX files.

One of many issues that result from all the hand holding and automatic this and that, the industry  has

been using the past five or more years.

- DirectX 9.0c is the installer version that precedes the June 2010 installer and it has no special merits vs

the June 2010 installer.

The DX9 files in DX9.0c are the same as those in the June 2010 install, but  it does not include all of the DX files.

There are newer versions of DX9,10 and 11 in the June 2010 installer which are not included in the DX 9.0c installer.

- Note to that the games that come bundled with Win10 would not have a DX issue, so the problem is far more

likely to do with hardware or drivers than DX

Microsoft "broke" DirectX 9.0c with DX10 and DX11.  Some DX9c functionality does not function the same.  My games have a font issue running on 8/8.1/10 that doesn't exist on 7.
